“Fashion is a way to bring a message of positivity. People usually look at Africa in a skeptical way, a place that needs to be helped. But fashion creates a vehicle to showcase Africa in a different way.” – Tim Hume, Editor of CNN
Oh, what I would have done to leave work to be at the Lagos Fashion Week this year. This year, 77 designers local and internationally came out to showcase their most impeccable designs and fashion. Several critics say that this show may have been the best yet. Lagos Fashion week is aimed to display Africa’s geography and culture, promote the Nigerian fashion industry, as well as minimizing the perception of our country within the economy. And I’m pretty sure with this show, they were able to exceed the expectations of others. I can only imagine what this fashion week will evolve into within the next few years and I hope within those years, I am able to experience this captivating event and cross it off my bucket list. Everyone knows of New York, Paris, London and Milan as the top global fashion capitals of the world and critics are saying in a few years, Lagos just might be added to that list. So watch out fashion capitals, Lagos is coming for you!
